The formation of aegagropiles from the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile (1813): plant tissue sources and colonisation by melanised fungal mycelium

چکیده

Aegagropiles are conglomerations of fibre debris from Posidonia oceanica meadows that frequently found along Mediterranean beaches, but the plant organ which these fibres arise remains unknown. In this study, a histological comparison P. organs 3 shoots with structure aegagropile showed most them leaf sheaths and rhizomes, suggesting they degradation products “matte” rather than litter, is mainly composed detached blades. Moreover, fungal hyphae, micro-sclerotia typical traces were in peripheral tissues living organs, as well degrading aegagropiles. We assume, by comparing Vohník’s observations made endophytic fungi might be attributed to dark septate endophyte (DSE) Aigialaceae (Pleosporales), Posidoniomyces atricolor, was recently described an endosymbiont roots. It constitutes one important microorganisms abundance degrade within matte give rise different types This study shows proliferation causes Posidonia, starting early plants, continuing and, probably, litter. The DSE plays much more role simple endosymbiont; its omnipresence (and middle lamella cell death during proliferation) causing various also contributes enrichment ‘matte’ compartment ecosystem, notably favouring nitrogen retention chitinous walls.

Experimental in situ exposure of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile to 15 trace elements.

The Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile has been used for trace element (TE) biomonitoring since decades ago. However, present informations for this bioindicator are limited mainly to plant TE levels, while virtually nothing is known about their fluxes through P. oceanica meadows. We therefore contaminated seagrass bed portions in situ at two experimental TE levels with a mix ...

Seasonal and spatial variability of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica

We investigated for the first time the occurrence of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in the leaves of Posidonia oceanica and we report its variability during 4 sampling periods covering the seasonal cycle (February, June, August and November) and along a gradient from 10 m to 30 m depth. The P. oceanica leaf DMSP content expressed per mass of dry weight (dw) ranged from 0.1 to 33.9 mol gdw−1 ...

Sulfide invasion in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica at Mediterranean fish farms: assessment using stable sulfur isotopes

The effect of organic enrichment of sediments on the composition of stable sulfur isotopes (δ34S), sulfide invasion (Fsulfide) and concentrations of total sulfur (TS) and elemental sulfur (S0) in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica was investigated along transects from 3 Mediterranean fish farms in Spain, Italy and Greece. The δ34S decreased and Fsulfide, TS and S0 decreased with distance from the ...

AxIOM: Amphipod crustaceans from insular Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows

BACKGROUND The Neptune grass, Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, 1813, is the most widespread seagrass of the Mediterranean Sea. This foundation species forms large meadows that, through habitat and trophic services, act as biodiversity hotspots. In Neptune grass meadows, amphipod crustaceans are one of the dominant groups of vagile invertebrates, forming an abundant and diverse taxocenosis. They ...
